Dog Training in North Port: Local Notes for Owners

North Port is a spread-out city of more than 100 square miles, so most dog training happens on long residential streets, at a large city dog park and on creek trails. Flood readiness belongs in the plan too, after Hurricane Ian in 2022.

Where dogs walk
the Canine Club Dog Park on Appomattox Drive and Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park

The city runs the Canine Club Dog Park on Appomattox Drive, a leash-free park with separate areas for large and small dogs. It also lists more than a dozen dog-friendly parks, from Blue Heron Park to Dallas White Park on the Cocoplum Waterway, and asks residents to call the city about leash requirements at each one. Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park has miles of trails, which are a good change from the paved streets most North Port dogs walk every day.

Hurricane Ian made landfall just south of Sarasota County in September 2022, and North Port saw severe flooding. Days later the Myakka River rose under I-75 and closed the interstate between the Toledo Blade and Jacaranda exits. Dogs that ride calmly in a crate, accept a stranger handling them and can rest in an unfamiliar place cope far better with evacuations and shelters. Those skills can be taught in a few calm sessions well before storm season.

The North Port Connector, a 5.5-mile paved trail that starts at Price Boulevard and runs through Deer Prairie Creek Preserve, opened in September 2022 and links toward the Legacy Trail. Long, straight stretches make it a useful place to practice steady leash walking once your dog handles bikes. Private lessons for leash work generally run about $75 to $150 each, and in-home visits about $100 to $200, with rates that vary by trainer and market.
