Dog Training Around Osprey and Oscar Scherer

In Osprey, the best walking spot for dogs is Oscar Scherer State Park, which requires a six-foot hand-held leash at all times. That rule, plus protected wildlife, makes close leash work the core skill for local dogs.

Oscar Scherer State Park on a six-foot leash and the Bay Street Park dog area

Oscar Scherer State Park allows pets in its campground and visitor areas, but they must be well-behaved and on a six-foot, hand-held leash. Pets are not allowed on the Lake Osprey swimming beach or in the lake, are kept out of rental canoes and cannot use playground equipment. A retractable leash extended past six feet breaks the rule, so a standard leash and a dog that stays near you are the practical answer.

The park and the nearby Scherer Thaxton Preserve are among the few protected areas that keep habitat for the threatened Florida scrub-jay, and park rules make it unlawful to harass wildlife. A dog that lunges at birds or squirrels on the trail is breaking that rule as well as making the walk hard. Teaching a calm look-at-me when wildlife appears is a reasonable goal for a few private lessons, generally estimated at about $75 to $150 each, with rates that vary by trainer and market.

For off-leash play, Bay Street Park in Osprey has about an acre of fenced dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs. Osprey is a small community along US 41, and the one-lane Blackburn Point Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway is one of its landmarks. Historic Spanish Point, a 30-acre museum and nature site, sits on the bayfront here too, so check its pet rules before you bring a dog.
