Training a Dog in the City of Sarasota

In Sarasota itself, the biggest training issue is leash manners, because city parks require dogs to be leashed outside designated dog parks. Downtown sidewalks, bayfront paths and a busy trail all reward a dog that walks calmly beside you.

In 2017 the Sarasota City Commission voted unanimously that dogs in city parks must be on a leash unless they are in an area set aside as a dog park. That makes the fenced paw parks the only legal off-leash space for most city dogs, and it puts leash skills front and center. Bayfront Park, near downtown, lets leashed dogs use its grass and paved perimeter, which makes it a good place to practice walking past joggers, strollers and people fishing along the water.

The Legacy Trail now runs all the way to Fruitville Road downtown, passing Payne Park on the way, after it reached the city in 2022. Pedestrian overpasses at Clark Road and Bee Ridge Road were finished in 2025, so walkers no longer have to wait at those busy crossings. For a dog, the paved trail means steady bike traffic. Practice on a quiet street first, keep your dog on the side away from riders and add the trail once your dog can hold position while a bike goes by.

For something quieter, Red Bug Slough Preserve on the south side of town has unpaved trails, and you need to bring your own waste bags. The 17th Street Paw Park splits large and small dogs into separate fenced areas with double gates. A dog who charges gates or ignores you inside a fence is a good candidate for a few private lessons, which generally run about $75 to $150 each and vary by trainer and market.
