Dog Training Notes for Venice, Florida

Venice is home to Brohard Paw Park, described as the only public beach in Sarasota County where dogs are allowed. That makes recall, calm greetings and beach manners more relevant here than almost anywhere else in the region.

Brohard Paw Park, the Venetian Waterway Park trail and Woodmere Paw Park

Brohard Paw Park sits just south of the Venice Fishing Pier, and it combines fenced off-leash areas split by dog size with a boardwalk to the sand, dog showers and fountains. Posted signs mark where the dog beach ends, and owners are expected to keep dogs inside that stretch. A dog that comes back when called, ignores fishermen's bait and greets other dogs politely makes the visit easy. A dog that bolts down the shoreline is a good reason to practice recall on a long line at home first.

The Venetian Waterway Park is a 9.3-mile concrete trail with two paths along the Intracoastal Waterway, and leashed dogs are welcome. The Legacy Trail starts at the historic Venice Train Depot and heads north toward Sarasota. Both trails get hot in the sun, so test the pavement with the back of your hand and walk early. Woodmere Paw Park, at about 2.5 acres, is another fenced option in Venice.

Venice calls itself the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, and beachcombers sift the sand for fossils, so dogs often meet crowds of people bent over the waterline. Red tide can also wash up here. Florida health officials advise rinsing a dog with fresh water after it swims in a red tide patch and keeping it from eating fish or drinking the water. A short private lesson, generally estimated at about $75 to $150 and varying by trainer and market, can cover a reliable leave-it before beach days.
